The ICANN Fellowship Program aims to strengthen the representation of the multistakeholder model by fostering opportunities for individuals from underserved and underrepresented communities to become active participants in the ICANN community the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the global organisation responsible for coordinating the stable and secure operation of the Internet’s unique identifier systems. Fellows are exposed to the workings of the ICANN community, assigned a dedicated mentor, and receive training across different areas of knowledge and skill building before, during, and after an ICANN Public Meeting, including travel assistance to attend the meeting in person.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a nonprofit organisation founded in 1998 and headquartered in Los Angeles, California, that coordinates the global Internet’s systems of unique identifiers including domain names, IP addresses, and protocol parameters. ICANN operates under a multistakeholder model, bringing together representatives from governments, the private sector, civil society, technical communities, and academia from around the world to participate in internet governance policy processes. ICANN holds three Public Meetings each year an Annual General Meeting, a Community Forum, and a Policy Forum which serve as the primary venues for policy development and community engagement. Through the Fellowship Program, ICANN actively works to diversify and strengthen participation from underrepresented regions and communities in its global governance processes.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

Must be at least 21 years of age
Must be interested in or already engaged in the various components of ICANN’s work in policy building, the operation of the Domain Name System, and the security and stability of the global Internet
Must complete mandatory ICANN Learn course(s) as specified in the Fellowship FAQs before the application deadline
Must NOT be involved in or associated with other ICANN-supported travel programs at the time of selection
Must have previously received no more than two fellowships — second and third-time fellows must prove their involvement and engagement in one of the ICANN communities
For the Policy Forum fellowship (ICANN89): must have successfully completed a previous ICANN Fellowship Program (open to Fellowship Alumni only)
Must have an ICANN Account to submit an application

Selection Criteria

Fellows are selected by the ICANN Fellowship Selection Committee, which evaluates applications based on the published Fellowship Selection Criteria. Key factors include the applicant’s interest in and engagement with ICANN’s work and internet governance, the potential for the fellowship to increase meaningful participation from underserved and underrepresented communities, the quality of the motivation statement, relevant professional or community experience, geographic and sectoral diversity considerations, and — for returning applicants — demonstrated engagement with the ICANN community since their previous fellowship. Applications that do not fulfil the mandatory ICANN Learn course requirements will not be considered. Successful candidates for each meeting round are announced approximately 2–3 months after the application deadline.
