The KMU International Student Scholarship is offered by Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU) to attract talented international students from around the world to study in Taiwan’s leading private medical university. KMU provides two intakes each year Fall and Spring and international students may apply for up to three programmes per application cycle. The scholarship is structured in three types: Type A, the most comprehensive award covering full tuition, on-campus accommodation, and a monthly living stipend; Type B, covering accommodation and tuition fees; and Type C, covering tuition fees only. All PhD students who meet the eligibility criteria are eligible for all three scholarship types; Master’s students may apply for Type B and Type C; and Undergraduate students are eligible depending on individual circumstances. Applications are submitted online through the KMU admissions portal (admission.kmu.edu.tw) there is no application fee. Applicants may apply for up to three programmes per application cycle.

Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU), founded in 1954 as Taiwan’s first private medical university, is located in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan’s vibrant southern metropolis. KMU is renowned for its cutting-edge teaching and research in health science fields and is home to over 5,000 local and international students. The university offers diverse academic programmes across medicine, pharmacy, nursing, public health, biomedical sciences, tropical medicine, and life sciences, with courses available in both English and Chinese. KMU maintains strong international research partnerships and provides excellent research facilities, clinical training opportunities, and a multicultural campus environment.

Benefits of the Programme

This programme will provide the following to its recipients:

  • Type A (Full Scholarship): NTD 200,000–260,000 per year — includes full tuition fee coverage, on-campus accommodation, and a monthly living stipend
  • Type B (Partial Scholarship): NTD 80,000–140,000 per year — includes accommodation coverage and tuition fee coverage (no monthly stipend)
  • Type C (Tuition Only): NTD 70,000–80,000 per year — covers tuition fee only

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must be an international student — must not hold ROC (Taiwan) citizenship or Chinese (PRC) nationality
  • Undergraduate applicants: must hold a senior high school diploma from an overseas senior high school, a foreign or bilingual school in Taiwan, or an equivalent qualification recognised by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education
  • Master’s applicants: must hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher from a university or independent college recognised by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education
  • PhD applicants: must hold a Master’s degree or higher from a university or independent college recognised by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education
  • Must meet the language proficiency requirements of the chosen programme:
    • For English-taught programmes: CEFR B1 or above, or a school-issued document confirming prior English-medium instruction
    • For Chinese-taught programmes: TOCFL A2 or CEFR A2 or above, or a school-issued document confirming prior Chinese-medium instruction
  • Must submit all required application documents including highest-level diploma, official transcripts, financial statement, proof of nationality, study plan, two letters of recommendation, a self-check eligibility form, and a passport-size photograph

Selection Criteria

Applications are reviewed by KMU’s international admissions team and each academic department or graduate institute, which determines its own assessment procedures. Candidates are evaluated on academic excellence, the quality of submitted documents including transcripts and letters of recommendation, the strength of the study plan, and language proficiency. Each department or institute conducts its review and evaluation between March 20 and April 20, with application results announced on May 14 for the Fall intake. Scholarship type awarded (A, B, or C) is determined based on the overall strength of the application and the candidate’s academic profile.
