Chevening Scholarships are the UK Government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, and administered by the Chevening Secretariat. The programme makes awards to outstanding scholars with leadership potential from across the world to study postgraduate courses at universities in the UK including Cranfield University, one of the UK’s leading postgraduate-only universities for technology, management, and applied science. Scholarships are typically for a one-year Master’s degree. Cranfield University is an eligible Chevening partner institution, and each year hosts Chevening Scholars from across the world, including recipients from countries such as Rwanda, India, Belize, Turks and Caicos, Morocco, Uruguay, Turkey, Mauritania, Albania, and Nigeria (2025–2026 cohort). Globally, approximately 700 Chevening Scholarships are awarded annually to scholars from over 110 countries. There are over 41,000 Chevening alumni worldwide, comprising an influential and highly-regarded global network.

Cranfield University, founded in 1946 and located in Bedfordshire, England (with a second campus at Shrivenham, Swindon), is a specialist postgraduate university with a global reputation for excellence in technology, management, and applied science. Cranfield is consistently ranked among the world’s top universities for aerospace, defence, environmental science, and engineering management. As a postgraduate-only institution, Cranfield offers a uniquely focused research and professional environment, with strong industry partnerships across aerospace, defence, manufacturing, energy, and the environment.

A monthly personal living allowance (stipend) to cover accommodation and living expenses

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

Must be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country (over 110 countries worldwide — check the official Chevening website for the current list of eligible countries; citizens of the USA and EU countries are not eligible)
Must commit to returning to their country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after the award has ended
Must hold an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK upper second class (2:1) honours degree, enabling entry to a postgraduate programme at a UK university
Must have at least two years of work experience (this may be up to five years for fellowship programmes — check the country-specific page for details)
Must apply to three different eligible UK university courses and receive an unconditional offer from at least one of those choices by July following application submission
Must meet the Chevening English language requirement by July following application submission

Selection Criteria

Chevening Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit and potential. Applicants are assessed on academic excellence (equivalent to a UK upper second class 2:1 honours degree), professional experience (minimum two years of work experience), leadership potential, and commitment to making a positive impact in their home country. Applicants must demonstrate the personal, intellectual, and interpersonal qualities necessary for leadership across a wide range of fields. The selection process is managed by British Embassies and High Commissions in each Chevening-eligible country, which shortlist candidates and conduct interviews before final selections are made. Applications open in August and close in October of each year through the Chevening online application system at chevening.org.
