Hamline University is deeply committed to making a U.S. university education accessible and affordable for international undergraduate students through a comprehensive range of scholarships and financial aid options. The flagship Hamline International Excellence Scholarship offers up to $35,000 per year to students with exceptional academic ability making it one of the most generous scholarships available at a private liberal arts university in the United States. All academic scholarships and Hamline awards are offered based on admission materials, and no separate application is required. In addition, Hamline offers talent scholarships for students majoring in art, business, digital media arts, music, science, theatre, or writing; United Methodist scholarships and loans for eligible active United Methodist Church members; international student work-study jobs earning up to $2,500 per year; and a range of outside scholarships.

Benefits of the Programme

This programme will provide the following to its recipients:

International Excellence Scholarship: up to $35,000 per year.
ELS Language Student Scholarship: $5,000 total ($1,250/year for up to 4 years).
Destination Hamline Grant: $3,000.
Additional scholarships: $1,000–$5,000.
Talent scholarships for areas such as art, business, digital media arts, music, science, theatre and writing.
Student employment: international students can earn up to $2,500 per year through work-study jobs.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

Hamline International Excellence Scholarship:

Must be an international undergraduate student applying to Hamline University
Must demonstrate exceptional academic ability
No separate application required — awarded based on admission materials on a competitive basis

ELS Language Student Scholarship:

Must have successfully completed the ELS English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Level 112 programme
Must transfer directly to Hamline University upon completion

Destination Hamline Grant:

Must be an international student who is not a resident of Minnesota

Talent Scholarships:

Must plan to major in art, business, digital media arts, music, science, theatre, or writing
Separate application and additional materials required

United Methodist Scholarships and Loans:

Must be an active member of the United Methodist Church
Separate application required

Selection Criteria

The Hamline International Excellence Scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis to students who have demonstrated exceptional academic ability. All academic scholarships including the International Excellence Scholarship, the ELS scholarship, and the Destination Hamline Grant are awarded automatically based on admission materials — no separate application or essay is required. Talent scholarships require a separate application and additional materials beyond the standard admissions process, and are assessed based on artistic, academic, or professional talent relevant to the declared major area. United Methodist scholarships require separate application to the relevant Methodist scholarship programme.
