The Maxwell King Scholarship (MKS) is named in honour of Professor Maxwell King, who made an outstanding contribution to graduate research and research training at Monash University, including eight years as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Research Training). The prestigious scholarship supports high-achieving students undertaking a PhD at a Monash University campus in Australia, helping to cover living costs while they focus on their doctoral research. With a total scholarship value of $55,537 per annum for 2027, the MKS provides substantial financial support throughout the recipient’s PhD studies.

Two scholarships are awarded each year, with one offered in the Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) disciplines and the other in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Monash University is a leading Australian university with campuses across Australia and international locations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Prato, Italy. The scholarship honours Professor Maxwell King’s legacy of strengthening graduate research training at the University and is administered through Monash’s broader Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship framework. Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

Must be one of: an Australian citizen, a New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident, an Australian humanitarian visa holder, or an international student
Must have submitted a scholarship application in the current year
Must meet Monash’s competitive scholarship selection process requirements
Must meet Monash’s English language proficiency requirements
This scholarship is also available to students undertaking Joint Research Awards where Monash University is the home institution

Selection Criteria

Monash scholarships are highly competitive and are awarded based on academic excellence, research outputs, and prior research experience. The standard RTP Scholarship terms and conditions, as outlined in the RTP Scholarship Procedures, apply, with the exceptions outlined in the eligibility criteria above. This prestigious scholarship is awarded in the 31 October scholarship round only; eligible applicants from Rounds 1 through 4 (of the same year) are automatically considered for nomination by the relevant faculty.
