The Simmons Distinguished Scholar Award is a prestigious and competitive merit scholarship offered by Simmons University to students with exceptional academic achievements, a strong commitment to their community, and a passion for creating positive change in society. The application consists of a formal essay of 300–500 words in response to a set essay prompt, submitted through the Common Application or via email in PDF or Word format with the subject line “Simmons Distinguished Scholar Award application” by December 1.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must apply as a first-year student for the fall semester
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.50
  • Must have a record of taking college prep, AP, honors, or IB courses
  • English proficiency is required for non-native English speakers
  • Standardized test scores are optional but recommended: 28+ ACT or 1300+ SAT
  • Must demonstrate a history of active community engagement through volunteer work, leadership roles, or other forms of involvement
  • Must demonstrate a passion for their chosen field of study, evident in academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and resume

Selection Criteria

Applicants are evaluated based on their formal essay response to the prompt: “Write an essay in which you describe your leadership style, giving specific examples to show what kinds of experiences have crafted you as a leader, and what kind of leader you think you will become at Simmons.” Shortlisted finalists are notified by the end of January and invited to complete an interview in February. Final recipients are selected based on academic excellence, demonstrated community commitment, leadership potential, and passion for their field of study, and are notified by March 1.
