The Berea College Tuition Promise Scholarship is a full-tuition scholarship automatically awarded to every admitted student at Berea College. No Berea student has paid tuition since 1892, making it one of the most extraordinary institutions in American higher education. The college is funded through a combination of a $1 billion+ endowment, state and federal aid, and annual donations, which together allow Berea to provide nearly 1,600 students each year with a tuition-free education. Beyond tuition, the college covers as much housing and meals as allowed by the FAFSA, and 85% of Berea’s fall 2025 class attend at zero cost. Every student also participates in Berea’s Work Program, working 10–15 hours per week in campus jobs to gain practical skills and contribute to the college community.
Berea College is a private liberal arts work college located in Berea, Kentucky, United States. Founded in 1855, it was the first college in the Southern United States to be both coeducational and racially integrated, reflecting its founding commitment to impartial love and access to education regardless of race, gender, or ability to pay. The college offers majors in 33 fields of study along with 39 minors, and is one of only nine federally recognised work colleges in the United States. With a mission to serve students of great promise who have limited economic means, Berea College has cosistently been recognised as one of the best values in American higher education and a transformative force in the Appalachian region and beyond.
