AUT (Auckland University of Technology) Doctoral Scholarships are awarded to attract and recognise highly achieving research students and to stimulate doctoral research in areas that enhance AUT’s research capability. AUT offers a number of doctoral scholarships, including the Vice-Chancellor’s Doctoral Scholarship, the AUT Doctoral Scholarship (alongside related faculty and school doctoral scholarships), and the AUT Te Aronui Postgraduate Research Scholarships for New Zealand Māori students. Doctoral scholarships are awarded to applicants with an excellent academic record (normally first-class honours), strong academic references, and the potential for high-quality research. To qualify for any doctoral scholarship, applicants must first gain admission into an approved doctoral programme at AUT before applying for the scholarship itself.

AUT’s PhD students sit at the heart of this research culture, working alongside academics and supervisors across fields such as creative technologies, sport and recreation, hospitality and tourism, science, and health science.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:
- Must have gained admission, or hold an Offer of Place, into an approved doctoral programme at AUT before applying for a scholarship
- Vice-Chancellor’s Doctoral Scholarship: must be a new doctoral candidate with an unconditional Offer of Place, hold a GPA of 8.0 or above in their most recent qualifying programme completed at a New Zealand tertiary institution, and enrol into the doctoral programme within three months of being offered the scholarship (Māori and domestic Pacific applicants require a GPA of 7.5 or above and must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident)
- AUT Doctoral Scholarship: open to all applicants, including those from countries other than New Zealand, who meet the admission requirements for a doctoral programme and hold an Offer of Place
- AUT Te Aronui Postgraduate Research Scholarships: must be a New Zealand Māori student enrolled in a master’s by research, doctoral, or professional doctorate (research component only)
- Must have an excellent academic record (normally first-class honours), strong academic references, and demonstrated potential for high-quality research

Selection Criteria
AUT assesses applicants using a number of criteria, including their GPA and research experience, and how their proposed research aligns with AUT’s research priorities. Applicants must provide details of two academic referees, who are asked to submit a confidential report directly to the scholarship portal by the closing date. If the applicant’s proposed AUT primary supervisor or head of school is not one of the two referees, the applicant must provide a letter or evidence of AUT faculty support, as an application will not be forwarded to the assessment panel without demonstrated faculty support.
