The Amirana Scholarship is a funding programme exclusively for international medical and dental students at Heidelberg University who come from the low- and middle-income countries of the Global South. Applications are open to international students who suddenly find themselves in financial difficulties due to circumstances beyond their control, or who need special support in the final phase of their studies. The scholarship is only available for the subjects of dentistry and medicine, at the study locations of Heidelberg and Mannheim, and can only cover short periods of financial hardship rather than an entire degree programme.
The Amirana Scholarship Fund was established in 2016 through the initiative and generosity of two U.S.-based alumni, Dr. Mahomed T. Amirana and Dr. Annelene J. Amirana, who met during their medical studies in Heidelberg in the 1950s. After graduating, the couple emigrated to the United States, where they worked as doctors. Mahomed Amirana, who grew up in India, had himself received a scholarship that made his studies in Heidelberg possible and changed the course of his life; the fund he and his wife established has since supported more than 25 medical and dental students.
Benefits of the Programme
This programme will provide the following to its recipients:
- The scholarship provides temporary financial support, usually for up to one year, to help students continue or complete their studies. It is not intended to fund an entire degree program
- The possibility of re-applying for further support if a new, special hardship arises during the course of study
- The possibility of receiving a grant during the final phase of studies, to allow the student to reduce working hours and successfully complete their degree
- Other benefits
