University of Galway’s Postgraduate Excellence Scholarship offers EU students a scholarship valued at €1,500, available to those accepted onto a full-time taught Master’s programme at the University, holding a first class honours (or equivalent) Level 8 primary degree. Scholarships are awarded to all students who meet the eligibility criteria, via a separate online scholarship application submitted in addition to the application for a place on the programme, with the award typically taking the form of a fee reduction. The scheme is open only to EU students; non-EU students are encouraged to check the University’s international postgraduate scholarship opportunities instead. The application portal for 2026 is now open, with applications closing on September 30, 2026.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:
- Must be an EU student (non-EU students should refer to the scholarship schemes operated by University of Galway’s International Office instead)
- Must have submitted a valid online scholarship application by the deadline
- Must have been accepted to, and be registering in Year 1 of, a full-time taught Master’s programme at University of Galway for the relevant academic year (repeat students are not eligible to apply)
- Must have attained a first class honours (or equivalent) in a Level 8 primary degree
- Must submit evidence of eligibility (i.e., a final transcript of their primary degree) via their Postgraduate Application portal
- Must register as a student of the University on the relevant programme by the due registration date, attend on a full-time basis, and meet attendance and other programme requirements throughout the session, or risk forfeiting and being required to repay the scholarship

Selection Criteria
The Scholarship is administered by the Admissions Office at University of Galway, and is awarded to all students who meet the eligibility criteria set out above, rather than through competitive ranking. The Admissions Office reviews applications and verifies submitted documentary evidence during the summer months; once notified of their eligibility, applicants must then complete the University’s registration requirements by the due date in order to receive the award.
