The Ah Nua Scholarship supports undergraduate Asian and Pacific/Pasifika students studying at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha the University of Canterbury and primarily aims to provide financial assistance to students experiencing financial and/or personal hardship. One scholarship is available annually, to the value of NZD $5,000, paid directly to the recipient’s University fees account, and must be taken up in the year following the year of application. Applications are accepted from previous recipients of the scholarship, who are given equal consideration alongside first-time applicants. The scholarship is co-tenable with any other award unless the conditions of that other award preclude it.

The Ah Nua Scholarship was established in 2021 through a donation from a UC alumnus who studied at the University of Canterbury as an overseas student in the 1990s, coming from a humble family in a developing country in Asia. During his studies, the student received tremendous support from the local Ōtautahi Christchurch community and was awarded a scholarship that enabled the completion of his studies. The UC graduate, who wishes to remain anonymous, decided to establish the Ah Nua Scholarship to reciprocate the generosity of the Kiwis by assisting future students in need. The University of Canterbury is a public research university located in Christchurch, New Zealand, founded in 1873 as a constituent college of the University of New Zealand, and is recognised nationally and internationally for its research strengths in science, engineering, arts, and business.
