The Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study (GIAS) Fellowships are offered by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to support internationally renowned academics in conducting free, independent research over a limited period normally between three and eight months in a stimulating intellectual environment with few regular obligations. The Institute brings together scholars from different areas of study, different backgrounds, and different nationalities to create a diverse intellectual community that encourages original, high-quality individual work and reflection. Fellows carry out the projects for which they applied in an environment conducive to reflection, concentration, and intellectual dialogue. Applications are evaluated through a competitive international process based on the quality and originality of the proposed work, and its suitability to the spirit and intellectual environment of the Institute. The evaluation is conducted by the Advisory Council of GIAS.
