The CWAJ Non-Japanese Graduate Scholarship (NJG) was established in 1981 by the College Women’s Association of Japan (CWAJ) to support graduate study in Japan for non-Japanese women enrolled in PhD degree programmes at Japanese universities. The Non-Japanese Graduate Programme supports graduate study in Japan for non-Japanese women who are enrolled in a PhD degree programme at a Japanese university. Women students from over 47 countries have benefited from the NJG Programme. Scholarships are awarded based on a candidate’s academic excellence, the quality and feasibility of her proposed study, and her potential to contribute to society. The Scholarship does not impose restrictions on field of study or age. For non-Japanese women already residing in Japan and preparing for doctoral study during April 2027 to March 2028, this is a valuable PhD funding opportunity. Applications must be submitted by postal mail only email submissions are not accepted.

The College Women’s Association of Japan (CWAJ) is a non-profit, non-political volunteer organisation founded in 1949 in Tokyo by Japanese and non-Japanese women, inspired to enable Japanese students to accept their offers to study abroad. Over more than seven decades, CWAJ has evolved its scholarship programme to support women leaders and innovators across a wide range of fields including government, international relief, the arts, and academia. CWAJ runs several parallel scholarship programmes including the Graduate Scholarship for Japanese Women to Study Abroad, the Scholarship for the Visually Impaired, and the Pandemic Response Scholarship for Nursing Students, in addition to the Non-Japanese Graduate Scholarship.
