The Andreas Tietze Memorial Fellowship was established by the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Vienna to commemorate the life and work of Andreas Tietze (1914–2003), a world-renowned Austrian Turcologist. The annual fellowship, for 2027, is open to advanced doctoral candidates and postdoctoral/early-stage researchers working on a specific topic in Turkish Studies. Projects requiring a research stay in Vienna, or that complement the Department’s current research focus environmental history, history of technology, digital humanities, consumption history, history of tourism, and cultural heritage are particularly welcome, though the fellowship is not limited to these areas, and applications from candidates seeking to work on external grant proposals (such as ERC, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, or the Austrian Science Fund) are also accepted.
The University of Vienna’s Department of Near Eastern Studies has a long-standing connection to Andreas Tietze, who served on its faculty until his retirement in 1984 after decades of research and teaching in Turkey and the United States. The Fellow becomes part of an international and vibrant academic community at the University, based in Vienna, and benefits from the city’s rich scholarly resources, including the Austrian National Library and the Habsburg Archives.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:
- Must be an advanced doctoral candidate (ABD status) or a postdoctoral/early-stage researcher who received their PhD degree not more than five years ago
- Must have a high level of proficiency in English; German knowledge is an advantage
- Must have an original research project

Selection Criteria
Applicants are assessed on the strength of their cover letter (explaining where they plan to submit a research fund application and how their project fits the Department’s research interests, mission, and goals), CV, project outline, and references. Note: travel costs to and from Vienna from the Fellow’s country of residence are not covered by the Department. Applicants are notified of the outcome approximately one month after the deadline.
