The Chevening Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS) Fellowship is a collaboration between the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. It is open to mid-career professionals and academics dedicated to promoting academic activities that encourage a more informed understanding of the culture and civilisation of Islam and contemporary Muslim societies. Six exceptional candidates are selected each year to undertake self-directed research at OCIS, exploring the intersection of faith, leadership, and global policy, while deepening their understanding of international relations, interfaith dialogue, and leadership in diverse cultural contexts.

The fellowship takes place at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, a Recognised Independent Centre of the University of Oxford dedicated to the study of Islam and the Islamic world. Fellows join a community of world-class academic resources and mentorship, engaging with topics such as Islamic history, classical Islamic sciences, economics and Islamic finance, public health, science and technology in the Muslim world, and the study of Muslims in the West.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following (in addition to Chevening’s standard eligibility criteria):

Must be a citizen of, and resident in, one of the following countries at the point of application: Afghanistan, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Senegal, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Türkiye, Turkmenistan, or Uzbekistan
Must hold a postgraduate level qualification (or equivalent professional training or experience in a relevant area) at the time of application

Selection Criteria

The selection process involves two rounds of interviews. The first interview is conducted with British embassies and high commissions, where applicants should be prepared to explain their suitability and motivations for the fellowship, as well as their research interests. Successful candidates are then invited to a second and final interview with representatives from OCIS, which focuses further on their research interests. Applicants must submit a short research proposal with their application, including a main research question and how they intend to conduct this research while in residence at the centre.
