The Human Rights Scholarship at the University of Melbourne is offered to domestic or international students enrolling in a graduate research degree and undertaking research in the field of Human Rights. The scholarship supports approximately 2 recipients per cycle, with a total value of up to $94,200, covering a living allowance, a full fee offset, a relocation grant, and for international students requiring a student visa Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). Eligible applicants are selected on the basis of academic merit, the area and level of commitment to human rights, and the strength of their supporting documentation. Applications are submitted online through a separate Human Rights Scholarship application process, and all applicants must already have applied for a graduate research place at the University of Melbourne.

Benefits of the Scholarship
This scholarship will provide 100% fee remission and $89,000 – $155,000 to its recipients:
- A living allowance of $42,000 per year pro rata (2024 full-time study rate) for up to 2 years for Master’s by Research students, or up to 3.5 years for Doctoral students, including limited paid sick, maternity, and parenting leave (the living allowance may be indexed annually)
- A full fee offset for up to 2 years for Master’s by Research students, or up to 4 years for Doctoral students
- A relocation grant of $2,000 for students relocating from States or Territories outside Victoria, or $3,000 for students relocating from outside Australia
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership for international students who require a student visa to study in Australia

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:
- Must have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a Master’s or Doctorate by research degree at the University of Melbourne
- Must intend to undertake graduate research in the field of Human Rights
- Must be committed to the peaceful advancement of respect for human rights that extends beyond academic studies, such as voluntary work and/or work experience
- Must not have already completed a research qualification at the same or higher level as the course for which a scholarship is sought
- Must intend to study on a full-time basis, unless compassionate or compelling circumstances prevent full-time study
- Must not have previously received a Human Rights Scholarship

Selection Criteria
Eligible applicants are selected on the basis of academic merit, the area of study in and level of commitment to human rights, and the strength of supporting documentation demonstrating a commitment to the peaceful advancement of respect for human rights beyond academic studies. Applicants will be notified of the outcome by email in February of the following year; reasons for non-selection and feedback on individual applications will not be provided.
