The University of Porto promotes and sponsors a wide range of financial support for its students and researchers in order to ensure equal opportunity regarding access to its courses and to reward the merit of those students who have displayed exceptional academic achievement. The main categories of funding available are SASUP Scholarships (means-tested monthly cash payments for Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Integrated Master’s students), Merit Scholarships (cash prizes for outstanding academic results, open to students regardless of socio-economic situation), Scientific Scholarships (for undergraduate research and postgraduate research training in science and technology institutions in Portugal), and Other Support mechanisms, including a Social Support Fund for students in temporary economic difficulty and external scholarships from partner institutions and government entities.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must be enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s, Master’s, or Doctoral programme, or an affiliated research project, at the University of Porto
  • SASUP Scholarships: must be a Portuguese national, European Union national, stateless person, or national of a country with a cooperation protocol that foresees reciprocal application of this benefit; students with International Student Status are excluded
  • Merit Scholarships: open to all enrolled U.Porto students (Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Integrated Master’s) who achieve the best academic results; no socio-economic requirement applies
  • Social Support Fund: must be an enrolled student who did not meet the SASUP Scholarship eligibility criteria and is in a temporary difficult economic situation
  • Scientific Scholarships: must be enrolled as an undergraduate or postgraduate researcher (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral level); the scholarship must be for a minimum period of three consecutive months
  • External Scholarships: eligibility conditions vary according to each external institution’s or programme’s own requirements

Selection Criteria

SASUP Scholarships are assessed and awarded annually by the Social Support Services of the University of Porto (SASUP) based on financial need and compliance with the relevant eligibility requirements, with deadlines and results published on the SASUP website. Merit Scholarships are awarded based on demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, as evidenced by students’ academic results, regardless of their socio-economic situation. Scientific Scholarships are assessed based on the scientific merit of the proposed research activity and the applicant’s academic and research profile. External scholarship recipients are selected according to the individual criteria of each external institution, government body, or partner programme.
