The University of Tasmania (UTAS) offers a comprehensive range of research degree scholarships to support PhD and Master’s by Research candidates, spanning major government-funded scholarships (the Australian Government Research Training Program, or RTP, and the Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship, or TGRS), prestigious domestic and Indigenous scholarships, externally funded scholarships (including China Scholarship Council joint awards), and a range of donor-funded top-up scholarships in specific disciplines and for specific candidate groups. Scholarships are allocated competitively based on academic merit, experience, prior learning, and other relevant attainments, with priority given to new candidates in strategic research areas.

UTAS operates across campuses in Hobart, Launceston, Cradle Coast (Burnie), and Sydney, and is home to internationally recognised research strengths in areas including Antarctic and Southern Ocean science, climate change, health, and environment. Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:
- Must be applying for, or currently enrolled in, a PhD or Master’s by Research degree at the University of Tasmania
- Must not be receiving an equivalent award, scholarship, or salary to undertake the proposed program (equivalent being defined as greater than 75% of the base stipend rate) for most scholarships
- Indigenous RTP Scholarship and Japanangka errol West Graduate Research Scholarship: must meet the Australian Government’s definition of Aboriginality (is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; and is accepted as such by the community) and provide confirmation of heritage from a recognised ORIC corporation
- Cuthbertson Elite Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship: must be an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen, or permanent resident; must hold First Class Honours or equivalent; must be applying for a full-time PhD in agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture, or silviculture; must not have been awarded a degree at the same or higher level as the proposed candidature
- Roberta Julian Scholarship: must be a current MRes or PhD candidate already holding a base stipend, have successfully completed Confirmation of Candidature, and demonstrate financial, educational, geographical, societal, and/or historical disadvantage
- Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship: must meet eligibility requirements as specified on the Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship website, with a commencement period of January 1, 2027 to June 30, 2027
- China Scholarship Council (CSC) Scholarships: must have graduated from a Chinese university or institution and meet eligibility requirements prescribed by both CSC and UTAS

Selection Criteria
All scholarship applications are assessed alongside research degree candidature applications, reviewed and ranked on a competitive basis by UTAS, with priority given to new candidates in strategic research areas. Selection is based on academic merit, relevant experience, prior learning, and other relevant attainments. For donor-funded scholarships, selection may also consider discipline-specific criteria, personal qualities, community contribution, and demonstrated disadvantage, as specified in each scholarship’s individual conditions of award. Applications received after the closing date of a round will only be considered at the next available round if a suitable applicant is not found by the current round’s outcome date.
