The ISTA-Fellow program at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) offers fully funded two-year postdoctoral fellowships for highly qualified candidates who have completed or will soon complete their PhD or equivalent in the natural or computer sciences, mathematics, or any related discipline. All research fields supported at ISTA are eligible, and the programme is designed for early-career researchers eager to perform innovative basic research alongside supervisors and colleagues who are among the best in the world. ISTA-Fellows receive a two-year, full-time employment contract with an internationally competitive salary (minimum €73,500 gross) and full social security coverage.

The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) is a young, international, and interdisciplinary research institution located in Klosterneuburg, just outside Vienna, Austria. Founded in 2006 and opened in 2009, ISTA is dedicated to basic research and the training of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers across biology, neuroscience, mathematics, physics, computer science, and data science. The Institute operates a modern campus featuring shared scientific facilities with cutting-edge equipment in scientific computing, imaging and optics, cryo-electron microscopy, nanofabrication, pre-clinical studies, a machine shop, and an NMR facility, and supports its international community with on-campus housing (subject to availability), onsite daycare, and German language courses.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must hold a PhD (or equivalent) or anticipate completing their PhD degree before the start of their fellowship (no later than June 15, 2027); a fellowship contract will not be issued until a copy of the diploma or proof of successful defence is provided
  • Must be applying to conduct research in one of the fields supported at ISTA (see ist.ac.at/en/research for the full list of supported research areas)
  • Must not have been employed at ISTA before September 1, 2026

Selection Criteria

Applications are reviewed by ISTA’s selection committee, which assesses candidates on the basis of scientific excellence, the quality and innovation of their proposed research, and their potential to contribute to ISTA’s interdisciplinary research environment. All applicants are notified of the outcome of their applications no later than four months after the application deadline, including reserve list status where relevant.
