The DAAD/EPOS Scholarship for Young Professionals from Developing Countries is offered through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) under its EPOS (Education for Sustainable Development) programme, and is available for a limited number of places on the MSc Environmental Governance (MEG) programme at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. The DAAD has selected the MEG programme as a development-related postgraduate course, making it eligible for EPOS funding. The application process is two-stage and highly competitive: candidates are first selected by the MEG programme committee, after which DAAD reviews and makes a final funding decision. The DAAD-EPOS scholarship application must be submitted one year ahead of admission.
The Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, founded in 1457, is one of Germany’s oldest and most prestigious universities, located in Freiburg im Breisgau in the Black Forest region of Baden-Württemberg. It consistently ranks among the top universities in Germany and in Europe across a range of disciplines including environmental science, law, medicine, humanities, and the social sciences. The MSc Environmental Governance (MEG) programme, offered since 2005 through the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources, is a fully English-taught, interdisciplinary postgraduate programme that draws students from around the world to study the governance of environmental systems, sustainability policy, and resource management.

Selection Criteria
The DAAD/EPOS scholarship selection is a two-stage, highly competitive process. In the first stage, the MEG programme committee reviews and selects candidates based on academic achievement (above-average bachelor’s degree in the upper third), the quality and relevance of professional experience, the strength of the motivation letter, and the overall alignment of the applicant’s background and career goals with the MEG programme. Shortlisted candidates are then submitted to DAAD, which conducts its own independent review and makes the final scholarship award decision. Shortlisted candidates are invited for an interview before a final decision is made. Results of the first-stage selection are communicated to applicants in February 2027. All information provided in the DAAD application form must be consistent with the motivation letter, CV, and any applications submitted to other DAAD EPOS programmes.
