The Minerva Scholarship Fund is an initiative of the Leiden Minerva Student Association and has been administered by the Minerva Scholarship Fund Foundation (MSF) since 2009. It provides Leiden University students of all disciplines with scholarships for exceptional or prestigious study and research projects abroad. The fund covers students from all faculties including Archaeology, Humanities, Medicine/LUMC, Governance and Global Affairs, Law, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Science, and ICLON. There are two application rounds per year, with deadlines on 15 April and 15 November. Applications must be submitted using the official application form downloaded from the MSF website, along with all required supporting documents, and sent to the address provided before the deadline.

Benefits of the Programme

This programme will provide the following to its recipients:

  • A scholarship of between €900 and €2,000
  • The following expenses can be subsidised: research costs; international travel costs; and living costs abroad

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must be registered as a Bachelor’s or Master’s student at Leiden University
  • Membership of L.S.V. Minerva is not required
  • The application must pertain to an exceptional or prestigious study or research project abroad
  • The project must fall into one of the following categories: internship, study, or research
  • PhD tracks and complete Master’s programmes are not eligible

Selection Criteria

Applications are evaluated by an allocation committee consisting of Leiden University lecturers from various disciplines. During the evaluation process, particular attention is given to the relevance of the research and how it will contribute to the advancement of academic knowledge, as well as the exceptional or prestigious nature of the proposed project abroad. Applicants are informed of the committee’s decision within one month of the application deadline. It is not possible to appeal against scholarship decisions. Recipients are obligated to submit a project report with accompanying images within three months of the end of the project.
