Hokkaido University offers several competitive scholarships of differing amounts for prospective international students wishing to study at the university. These scholarships include the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships, the Hokkaido University Special Grant Program for Self-Supported International Students, and a number of other external scholarships. Students are encouraged to apply for these scholarships prior to leaving their home country. In addition to the scholarships listed on this page, various scholarships are also available to current international students, either applied for through the university or directly details of which can be found on the university’s dedicated international student support website.

RMIT University Research Postgraduate Scholarships 2027 – Australia

Eligibility Criteria

Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship — University Recommendation:

  • Overseas students who newly come to Japan to study at the Master’s or Doctoral level are eligible to apply
  • Must have an academic record score of 2.30 (out of 3.00) or above at the latest or current school/academic institution and must be expected to maintain the same academic standards throughout the scholarship programme
  • Must satisfy the language level/ability requirements

Hokkaido University Special Grant Program for Self-Supported International Students:

  • Must be a prospective international student applying to enter a doctoral programme
  • Must have an excellent academic record
  • Must be able to demonstrate how their research can make an impact on an international scale in their chosen field
  • Must be applying to one of the following participating graduate schools:
    • Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine
    • Graduate School of Environmental Science
    • Graduate School of Chemical Sciences and Engineering
    • Graduate School of Infectious Diseases

Selection Criteria

For the MEXT University Recommendation, candidates are screened and nominated by Hokkaido University based on their academic record, language ability, and overall suitability for postgraduate study in Japan. The number of recipients is very limited. For the Hokkaido University Special Grant Program, selection is carried out by each participating graduate school on the basis of academic excellence and the quality and international relevance of the applicant’s proposed research. For Embassy Recommendation, candidates are assessed and shortlisted by the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in their home country before being referred to the university for a Letter of Acceptance.
