The Honjo Scholarship formally known as the Scholarship for Foreign Students Studying in Japanese Graduate School is offered by the Honjo International Scholarship Foundation and is open to international students who study or plan to study at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University’s (APU) Graduate School for a doctoral or master’s degree. Applications can be submitted from abroad as long as the applicant has been accepted into APU’s Graduate School. All nationalities and research fields are welcome. A key feature of this scholarship is that applicants may apply directly to the foundation without pre-selection by the university, making it accessible to both admitted and enrolled students.
Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU), located in Beppu, Oita, Japan, is one of the most internationally diverse universities in Japan and is consistently recognized as Western Japan’s top international university. Founded in 2000, APU brings together students from over 90 countries and regions, with international students making up approximately half of the student body. The university offers fully English-based graduate programmes and holds prestigious international accreditations including AACSB, AMBA, and TedQual. APU’s Graduate School offers programmes in Asia Pacific Studies (Master’s and Doctoral) and Management (MBA), drawing on a richly multicultural campus environment to prepare global leaders and researchers.
Benefits of the Programme
This programme will provide the following to its recipients:
- Monthly scholarship of ¥230,000 for programmes of 1–2 years duration
- Monthly scholarship of ¥210,000 for programmes of 3 years duration
- Scholarship is paid every month throughout the minimum period required to acquire the degree

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:
- Must not have Japanese citizenship
- Must be currently admitted to APU or in the process of applying (for either a master’s or doctoral programme)
- Must have conversational proficiency in Japanese, as interviews will be conducted in Japanese
- Applicants for the master’s programme must be 29 years old or younger when starting the programme; applicants for the doctoral programme must be 34 years old or younger when starting the programme
- Must have a strong intention to pursue a future career serving their home country
- Must have a deep understanding of international friendship and goodwill, and be willing to participate in events organised by the Foundation and join its alumni network

Selection Criteria
Candidates are assessed directly by the Honjo International Scholarship Foundation without pre-selection by APU. Selection is based on the applicant’s academic profile, research field, commitment to serving their home country upon completion of studies, conversational proficiency in Japanese, and willingness to actively participate in Foundation events and its alumni network. Interviews are conducted in Japanese. Applicants must submit their application both to APU and separately to the Honjo International Scholarship Foundation as part of the two-step process.
