The Curtin University Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Scholarships are offered through the Australian Government’s Research Training Program (RTP) and provide financial support for students undertaking a research degree at Curtin University. Scholarship support comprises a living stipend and a tuition fee offset, providing candidates with financial stability throughout their research programme. Applicants can either apply for an existing approved research project or propose a new research project of their own. Expressions of Interest (EOI) must be submitted through Curtin’s online EOI form between July 1 and July 31 each year. Prospective applicants are encouraged to connect with a Curtin researcher who can support their application before the window opens.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

Must be enrolling in an eligible Higher Degree by Research programme at Curtin University — PhD, DBA, EdD, DrSUSDEV, MPhil, MRes, or Collaborative PhD
Must hold a Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree with first or upper-second class honours in a relevant field
Must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through Curtin’s online EOI form between July 1 and July 31 of the application year
For the Master of Research (MRes): must be a current Curtin student enrolled in the final unit of an end-on honours programme and expecting to receive first or upper-second class honours — students who have already been awarded their Honours degree are ineligible
Must meet Curtin University’s English language requirements (for international applicants)
Must not already be receiving an equivalent Commonwealth-funded research scholarship

Selection Criteria

HDR scholarship applications are assessed competitively by Curtin University on the basis of academic excellence, research potential, and the quality and feasibility of the proposed research project. Candidates applying for existing approved projects are assessed on their academic record and fit with the project’s requirements. Candidates proposing a new research project must demonstrate a clear and well-developed research proposal and secure the support of a Curtin research supervisor. For the RTP Scholarship, ranking is based on academic achievement in the qualifying degree, the strength of the research proposal, and the relevance of prior research experience. Additional scholarships such as the HDR Industry Internship and Collaborative PhD are assessed according to their own specific criteria.
