The Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) position in Modeling Wetland Reforestation for Carbon & Waterfowl is offered by the Snowden Waterfowl Center of Excellence within the College of Forestry, Agriculture, and Natural Resources at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM). The position supports a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Forest Resources with an emphasis in Wildlife Management, and focuses on studying the spatial arrangement of bottomland hardwood reforestation on habitat suitability for midcontinent mallards. Specific aspects of the project include the development of a user-friendly ArcGIS Online decision support tool for prioritising areas for reforestation that will maximise co-benefits for waterfowl and carbon sequestration.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must hold a B.S. degree in geospatial sciences, geography, wildlife management and conservation, or a related field
  • Must have a minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 2.7, or a GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate coursework
  • Must have at least 1 year of relevant experience
  • Must hold a valid U.S. driver’s licence or obtain one within 60 days of starting employment
  • Must be willing and able to undertake overnight travel and fall/winter fieldwork
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Selection Criteria

Candidates are assessed on the strength of their academic record, the relevance of their undergraduate degree to the project’s focus areas, and their demonstrated experience in relevant fields. Preferred qualifications include a background and experience in wildlife ecology, conservation, and management; experience with remote sensing, spatial modelling, or decision-support tools; programming experience in Python or R; and knowledge of carbon accounting, forestry, or ecosystem restoration. Experience with waterfowl, GIS, remote sensing, data science, and landscape ecology are specifically preferred.
