The University of Messina 42nd PhD Call is a public admission competition for doctoral programmes at the University of Messina (UniME) for the academic year 2026/2027. The competition offers 94 scholarship-funded positions alongside non-scholarship places across 15 doctoral programmes covering engineering, bioengineering, physics, chemistry, life and health sciences, psychology, cognitive sciences, legal sciences, political sciences, humanistic sciences, economics, sustainability, veterinary sciences, public administration, and other disciplines. Several programmes also include scholarships funded by research projects, public institutions, companies, and regional initiatives. The competition is open to candidates of all nationalities and ages, with no restrictions.

The University of Messina (Università degli Studi di Messina — UniME), founded in 1548 and located in Messina, Sicily, is one of Italy’s oldest and most historically significant public universities. An annual scholarship of €16,243 gross per year
An increase of 50% of the scholarship amount for mandatory research periods conducted abroad
Annual renewal of the scholarship, subject to a positive assessment of doctoral activities
Full exemption from tuition fees for scholarship recipients
Candidates from particularly poor and developing countries are exempt from the €30 application fee

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

Open to all nationalities and ages — there are no age or nationality restrictions
Must hold, as of the call deadline, a Master’s degree (laurea magistrale/specialistica), a single-cycle degree, or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent and recognised as suitable for admission to a PhD programme; or must obtain this qualification no later than October 31, 2026 — failure to do so results in forfeiture of the position in the event of a successful selection outcome
The suitability of a foreign degree is assessed by the examination committee solely for the purposes of the selection procedure
Must meet the specific admission requirements of the chosen PhD programme as detailed in the individual programme attachment — each of the 15 programmes has its own admission criteria, documentation requirements, and evaluation criteria
Must pay the non-refundable application fee of €30 via PagoPA (waived for candidates from particularly poor and developing countries)

Selection Criteria

The selection process combines the evaluation of academic qualifications with examinations and is conducted by a dedicated PhD Examination Commission established for each programme. The minimum score required for eligibility is 60 out of 100 points. Each programme has its own evaluation criteria and scoring system as detailed in its respective attachment; some programmes may additionally require a research project, oral examination, or other discipline-specific assessments. The oral examination calendar and Microsoft Teams classroom links are published on the University of Messina’s official portal for each programme. Final ranking lists are published following the completion of the selection process, and admission results are formalised by Decree of the Rector (D.R. approval of final acts).
