The HUGO Lab (HUman Factors & erGOnomics Lab) at the University of South Carolina’s Department of Mechanical Engineering is offering two fully funded PhD positions under the supervision of Dr. Jangwoon Park, Associate Professor (Incoming). The HUGO Lab focuses on human-AI interaction, human-machine interaction, human-robot interaction, human factors and ergonomics, industrial safety, vehicle ergonomics, human variability, digital twin systems, human-centered design, and product design and development, with applications in transportation, energy, industrial systems, control rooms, and pipeline safety.
The University of South Carolina (UofSC), founded in 1801 and located in Columbia, South Carolina, is one of the United States’ leading public research universities and a Carnegie R1 Doctoral University with the highest research activity classification. The university serves over 35,000 students across more than 300 degree programmes in 15 colleges and schools. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at UofSC’s Molinaroli College of Engineering and Computing offers strong graduate programmes with specialisations in advanced materials and manufacturing, aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, nuclear engineering, mechatronics, and human factors and ergonomics.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:
- Must hold a Master’s degree in Engineering or a related field
- Must have a strong interest in human-centered systems and ergonomics
- Must have good analytical and written/verbal communication skills
- Must meet the University of South Carolina Graduate School minimum requirements: undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0/4.0; GRE Verbal ≥150 and Quantitative ≥155
- International applicants must meet English language requirements: TOEFL iBT score of 80 or above, or IELTS score of 6.5 or above
- Open to applicants of all nationalities

Selection Criteria
Candidates are assessed on the basis of their academic background, research experience, and the quality of submitted application materials. Preferred qualifications include research publications in journals or conferences, programming experience (MATLAB preferred), and knowledge of statistical methods such as regression and ANOVA. Experience conducting field and laboratory work in human factors, ergonomics, human-AI interaction, or related areas is strongly advantageous. Only shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online or in-person interview with Dr. Jangwoon Park.
