The Horatio Alger Association Undergraduate Scholarships comprise over 70 distinct scholarship programmes administered by the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit organisation that honours outstanding individuals who embody the American Dream and uses their generosity to fund need-based scholarships for promising young people persevering through adversity. By filling out one application, applicants are automatically considered for all scholarships for which they are eligible except for some Specialized Scholarships that require a separate application.

The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, founded in 1947 and headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, is one of the United States’ most distinguished scholarship-granting organisations. The Association honours the achievements of outstanding leaders who have succeeded in overcoming adversity and inspires youth through the Horatio Alger Award, scholar services, mentorship, a College Success Program, and an extensive alumni network of over 30,000 Horatio Alger Scholars. Since its founding, the Association has awarded more than $250 million in scholarships to over 35,000 students across the United States and Canada, providing not just financial support but access to a lifelong community of scholars, members, and supporters committed to the values of integrity, perseverance, and the American Dream.

Scholarship awards ranging from $10,000 to $40,000 (depending on the scholarship program)

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

Must be a United States citizen
Must demonstrate financial need — adjusted gross family income of $100,000 or lower is required for most programmes
Must display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity
Must be enrolled full-time as a high school junior, high school senior, or current college student (depending on the specific programme)
Must exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree at an accredited non-profit public or private institution in the United States
Must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 (some programmes require a minimum GPA of 2.5)

Selection Criteria

Candidates are assessed through a multi-step review process by the Horatio Alger Association and its scholarship committees. Selection is based primarily on demonstrated financial need (adjusted gross family income of $100,000 or lower), integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity (as described in the essay responses and verified by the Support Form Provider), academic achievement (minimum GPA requirements vary by programme), co-curricular and community service involvement, and commitment to pursuing and completing a bachelor’s degree. The Counsellor Certification Form submitted by the school counsellor forms part of the verification process. By submitting one application, candidates are automatically considered for all scholarships for which they meet the eligibility criteria, except for Specialized Scholarships that require a separate application.
