The University of Copenhagen (UCPH) Scholarships for International Students are offered through the Danish Government Scholarship programme to a limited number of highly talented non-EU/EEA students with outstanding academic records. No separate scholarship application is required — all eligible non-EU/EEA students who apply for a Master’s degree at UCPH are automatically considered for the scholarship as part of the admissions process. Scholarships are awarded solely on the basis of academic excellence; financial need is not considered. The Danish Government Scholarship is granted either as a full or partial tuition fee waiver and/or as an amount covering basic living expenses, depending on the faculty. Living expense grants are subject to Danish tax legislation, though certain nationalities may be exempt.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

Must be a citizen of a country outside the EU, EEA, or Switzerland
Must be admitted to a Master’s degree programme at the University of Copenhagen
Must be granted a time-limited residence permit for the purpose of studying a higher educational programme in Denmark
Must NOT have a legal claim to the rights of Danish citizens
Must NOT be eligible for a grant under the Danish State Educational Grant and Loan Scheme (SU)
Must NOT have been granted a Danish residence permit as the child of a foreign citizen under the specific provisions of the Danish Aliens Consolidation Act described in the scholarship terms

Faculty of Science — additional criteria:

Must have a grade point average above 90% in the Bachelor’s degree to be considered
Must be applying to the Faculty of Science as the first priority application
In 2025, recipients had a GPA of minimum 98%

Selection Criteria

The Danish Government Scholarship is awarded solely on the basis of academic achievement — financial need is not taken into consideration. All eligible non-EU/EEA applicants are automatically assessed for the scholarship as part of the admissions process, with no separate application required. At the Faculty of Science, only applicants with a GPA above 90% of their Bachelor’s degree who apply to the Faculty as their first priority are considered. At the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and Faculty of Science, second-year scholarships are awarded to the best-performing fee-paying students after the first year of study, without a separate application. At the Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Theology, the number of scholarships is very limited and awarded at the time of the admissions decision. Scholarship offers are communicated directly through the UCPH application portal, and must be accepted by the specified deadline to remain valid.
