The Saïd Foundation Scholarship has been offered since 1984 by the Saïd Foundation, a UK-registered charity (No. 1125521) founded by businessman and philanthropist Wafic Saïd. The programme aims to empower people through educational opportunities and to encourage the development of the Middle East by supporting outstanding individuals with leadership potential from Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine to pursue one-year taught Master’s degrees at leading UK universities. The scholarship covers all financial needs for the study period, including tuition fees, living costs, and return airfare. There are no restrictions on academic subject, but candidates must demonstrate that their chosen course will enable them to contribute to the development of their home country on return. Candidates must apply to one or more of the Foundation’s partner universities, which include leading institutions across the UK. –

The Saïd Foundation is a UK-registered charitable trust (Registered Charity No. 1125521) established by Wafic Saïd, a prominent businessman and philanthropist of Syrian origin. The Foundation has been awarding educational scholarships since 1984 and has supported hundreds of scholars from Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine to study at leading UK universities. Beyond scholarships, the Foundation is also involved in humanitarian work including support for SOS Children’s Villages, Medical Aid for Palestinians, St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group, the International Rescue Committee, and UNHCR DAFI Scholarships for refugee students.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

Must hold Syrian, Jordanian, Lebanese, or Palestinian nationality and permanently reside in one of these countries — Syrians residing elsewhere due to current circumstances in Syria are also eligible
Must hold an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK 2:1 degree or higher — candidates in the final year of their undergraduate degree will also be considered
Must have work and/or voluntary experience relevant to their field of study and a clear career path on completion of their studies and return to their home country or region
Must demonstrate leadership potential in their chosen field or sector
Must have applied for an eligible course at a Foundation partner university — if applying to a non-partner university, a legitimate exceptional reason must be provided; the Foundation will only consider a course at a non-partner university if it is not offered at a partner university
Must meet the Foundation’s English language requirements (IELTS or equivalent — check the Foundation’s English language requirements page for specific thresholds; some universities have higher requirements and candidates must also meet the chosen university’s requirements)
Must upload all required documentation by the application deadline

Selection Criteria

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit and are carefully considered by officers and trustees of the Foundation and external assessors. Decisions are based on the candidate’s academic excellence (equivalent to a UK 2:1 degree or higher), the usefulness of the proposed subject to the development of their home country, their leadership potential, their commitment to serving their community, their future career goals, and their practical ability to make use of the knowledge to be gained in the UK upon their return to the Middle East. Candidates must list up to three postgraduate courses in order of preference on the application form. The Foundation uses a multi-stage review process and will contact shortlisted candidates for further information where required.
