The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program (MCFSP) at the University of Pretoria (UP) is a prestigious, fully funded scholarship initiative offered in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation to support academically talented young Africans who face economic and social barriers, including refugees, internally displaced persons, and individuals living with disabilities. The university has been offering scholarships and wraparound support to high-achieving young Africans pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate (Honours and Master’s) degrees since January 2014. In December 2023, the University of Pretoria and the Mastercard Foundation entered into a Phase II agreement to support even more young people across the continent. The program goes beyond traditional scholarships by incorporating leadership development, mentorship, community service, internships, and entrepreneurship as essential components. Upon completion of their studies, scholars commit to giving back in ways that enhance the economic growth and social development of their communities and the continent.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must be an African youth facing significant socio-economic challenges, including refugees, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and individuals with disabilities
  • Must have applied and been accepted into one of the specified undergraduate, Honours, or Master’s programmes at the University of Pretoria
  • Must demonstrate outstanding academic performance, maintaining a high academic average
  • Must exhibit leadership qualities and a commitment to community service through involvement in projects, school activities, or religious organisations

Selection Criteria
