The TANDEM Scholarship Programme, established by the Deutsche Universitätsstiftung (DUS) in 2012, supports first-generation academics students whose families have no academic background throughout their studies at a German university. Its distinguishing feature is a mentoring relationship with a university professor close to the scholar’s subject area and place of study, enabling regular, study-accompanying exchange. Beyond the mentoring relationship, DUS offers scholars two workshops per year, one personal one-on-one coaching session with a professional coach during their studies, networking events, subject-related events, and an annual call-off budget for study-related costs.

The Deutsche Universitätsstiftung is dedicated to promoting science, research, and education in Germany, in particular by supporting scientists and young academic talent, alongside a charitable purpose. The foundation aims to show young people the possibilities, perspectives, and opportunities of university study and to support them along that path. Since establishing TANDEM in 2012, the foundation also launched the Welcome and hochform scholarship programmes in October 2015 for Bachelor’s and Master’s students from refugee backgrounds studying in Germany.
