The Churchill Cambridge Scholarship is a prestigious award funded by an endowment established by the Sir Winston Churchill Society of Edmonton and supported by the Churchill Scholarships Foundation of Alberta. It is awarded to a University of Alberta engineering graduate entering PhD studies at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. The successful applicant enters Churchill College at Cambridge University, a college that houses a high concentration of engineering and science graduate students. The scholarship is normally renewed for a second and third year of study subject to suitable academic progress. Cambridge University offers a broad range of research areas and facilities in engineering across six research divisions: Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, Acoustics, Turbomachinery, and more.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must be a graduate of the University of Alberta entering PhD studies at Cambridge University; OR
  • Must be currently completing a BSc or MSc degree in Engineering at the University of Alberta
  • Graduates with one or two years of professional experience will also be considered

Selection Criteria

The selection committee looks for candidates who will excel at Cambridge University and project a positive image as ambassadors for Alberta. Applications are assessed based on the letter of application outlining the applicant’s reasons for wishing to study at Cambridge and a brief description of their area of research interest, a University of Alberta transcript, and the names of two references preferably from the University of Alberta. Applicants may also attach a formal resume to strengthen their application.
