The PhD Scholarship in Applied Health Research is offered by the University of Kent’s Centre for Health Services Studies in collaboration with the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey, and Sussex (ARC KSS). The scholarship supports doctoral research on the theme of Wider Determinants of Health, with a particular focus on using applied health research to explore health inequalities and the wider determinants of “health in places.” The scholarship is based within the Centre for Health Services Studies at the University of Kent. Areas of particular research focus include children and young people in deprived areas such as coastal regions, sub-population groups in under-researched environments such as the criminal justice system and care homes, developing methodological approaches to understand and monitor health and its wider determinants in “places” (including neighbourhoods, coastal communities, rural communities, and deprived communities), and using routine data to understand inequalities in health.
The University of Kent, founded in 1965 and located in Canterbury, Kent, England, is a leading research-intensive public university and a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The university’s Centre for Health Services Studies (CHSS) is a well-established, multidisciplinary research centre with expertise in applied health research, health services evaluation, public health, and health policy. CHSS works closely with NHS partners, local authorities, and national bodies to conduct high-quality, practice-relevant research that informs health and social care policy and practice.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:
- Must have completed a health- or social work/care-related postgraduate training course at Master’s level, equivalent to merit or distinction (a combination of qualifications and/or experience equivalent to a relevant UK Master’s level degree may also be accepted)
- Must be eligible for UK home-rate fees, or must be an international student able to make up the difference between home-rate fees and international fees

Selection Criteria
Candidates are assessed on the basis of their academic background, the quality and clarity of their research proposal, and the relevance of their proposed research to the scholarship’s thematic focus on the wider determinants of health and health inequalities in places. The research proposal must address the following components: an introduction to the topic, a clear research question and aim, a methodological approach (including relevant analysis plans, patient and public involvement plans, and research inclusion considerations), a recruitment strategy for research participants, and the potential impact of the doctoral research. Applications are submitted through the University of Kent’s online postgraduate application system, selecting the PhD in Applied Health Research (full-time).
