The University of Camerino (UNICAM) PhD Programme — 42nd Cycle is a public selection procedure for admission to doctoral degree programmes at the School of Advanced Studies – International Doctoral School (SAS) of the University of Camerino, open equally to EU and non-EU citizens. A total of 38 scholarships are currently available across six PhD programmes: Architecture, Design, and Planning (6 scholarships); Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biotechnology (9 scholarships); Computer Science and Mathematics (4 scholarships); Legal and Social Sciences (3 scholarships); Life and Health Sciences (11 scholarships); and Physics, Earth, and Materials Sciences (5 scholarships).
The University of Camerino (Università degli Studi di Camerino UNICAM), founded in 1336 and located in Camerino, in the Marche region of central Italy, is one of Italy’s oldest and most distinguished universities. UNICAM is a small but internationally oriented research university organised across five academic schools covering architecture and design, biosciences and veterinary medicine, law, pharmaceutical and health sciences, and science and technology. Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:
- Must be an Italian or foreign citizen (EU or non-EU) — the selection procedure is open to all, without discrimination as regards gender, age, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, political opinions, socioeconomic conditions, and disabilities
- Must hold a specialisation/Master’s degree or similar university qualification recognised as suitable by the academic authorities, or must be on track to obtain such a qualification by the date of enrolment in the PhD course (admission in this case is made “subject to confirmation”)
- Candidates who have obtained their academic qualification abroad must present either a Certificate of Comparability and Verification issued by the ENIC-NARIC centre in Italy (CIMEA) or a Declaration of Value issued by the Italian Embassy in the country where the qualification was issued, by March 31, 2027
- Must pay a non-refundable application fee of €20 per application at the time of submission
- Anyone who has previously, even partially, benefited from a scholarship for a PhD programme cannot apply for the scholarship a second time
- Scholarships cannot be combined with other scholarships, except those granted by national or foreign institutions for the purpose of supporting research stays abroad

Selection Criteria
The selection procedure is two-stage. In Phase 1, the Selection Committee evaluates submitted documents based on three criteria: educational and research curriculum and relevance to the research field (0–5 points); project proposal and relevance to the research field (0–5 points); and motivations as stated in the statement of purpose (0–5 points). Candidates must score at least 9 out of 15 in at least one research field to be shortlisted for Phase 2. In Phase 2, shortlisted candidates undergo remote oral interviews assessed on three criteria: knowledge of the research field (0–5 points); ability to outline research activities within the research field (0–5 points); and communication and language skills (0–5 points). A minimum score of 9 out of 15 in at least one research field is required for admission. Final ranking lists are drawn up in decreasing order of total score; in cases of equal scores, the youngest candidate is given priority, and in the event of further equal scores, the less represented gender is considered.
