The Fully Funded 4.5-Year PhD Studentship in Health Economics is offered by the Centre for Health Economics (CHE) at the Monash Business School, Monash University, through its Integrated PhD Program. The programme provides rigorous training in advanced health economics and related fields, and begins with one year of advanced coursework, research training, and a minor thesis undertaken as part of a Master of Commerce (MCom). Students who meet progression requirements then continue into the PhD, which includes advanced research training, career development, and culminates in a written thesis over approximately three and a half years. Research opportunities are available across all areas of health economics, with a focus on producing research with real-world impact across themes including disadvantage and health inequalities, global and environmental health economics, economic behaviour and preferences in health, economic modelling of health policies and technologies, and health financing and market organisation.

The Centre for Health Economics (CHE) at Monash University is one of the world’s leading research groups in the economic analysis of health and health care, with the largest Health Economics PhD programme in Australia and the highest concentration of health economists in the Asia-Pacific region. Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

Must have completed an Honours degree, a four-year Bachelor’s degree, or a Master’s degree with excellent results and preferably a research component in a relevant discipline
Relevant disciplines include health economics, labour economics, economics, econometrics, and other quantitative fields such as data science, mathematical statistics, actuarial science, public health, or psychology with strong statistical training
Must meet Monash Business School’s English language requirements as outlined on the Integrated PhD Program page

Selection Criteria

Candidates are assessed on the strength of their academic background, including the quality and level of their undergraduate or postgraduate degree and results, the relevance of their discipline to health economics research, and their research potential. Applicants are strongly encouraged to use the CHE PhD readiness tool available on the Monash Business School website to assess their eligibility before applying. Outstanding candidates may be considered for the enhanced scholarship of up to AU$47,000 per annum. Applications must follow the Integrated PhD Program application process as outlined on the Monash Business School website, and must be submitted between July 1 and August 31, 2026 for February 2027 commencement.
