Selection Criteria

Applications are evaluated on three core criteria: the strength of the applicant’s research statement (which must clearly demonstrate direct alignment with one of Meta’s specified research areas), the publication record (prior publications in top-tier venues such as NeurIPS, CVPR, ACL, or USENIX significantly strengthen candidacy, though they are not mandatory), and the quality of two letters of recommendation — one of which must come from the applicant’s PhD advisor. Generic research statements that do not demonstrate explicit relevance to Meta’s research mission are unlikely to succeed. Meta is particularly interested in research that is innovative, applicable, and has the potential for real-world impact. The fellowship actively encourages applications from individuals of diverse backgrounds and those from traditionally under-represented minority groups in computing.
