The KWI International Fellowship Programme is a prestigious 6-month research fellowship offered by the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen, Germany, in the tradition of institutes for advanced study. Now in its 14th cohort, the programme invites outstanding researchers from around the world working in the humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences to pursue independent and innovative research projects in an interdisciplinary and intellectually stimulating environment. The fellowship is designed for early- to mid-career postdoctoral scholars whose research aligns with KWI’s current research agenda spanning science studies, visual literacy, aesthetic practices, constellations of historical impact, and dialogues between the cultural and social sciences. Various project formats are welcome: fellows may devote their time to finishing a book or special issue, finalising a research proposal, setting up a research group, or establishing collaborations with universities of the Ruhr Alliance.

The Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut Essen (KWI) — Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities — is an interdisciplinary research institute for the humanities and social sciences located in Essen in the Ruhr Area, operating under the umbrella of the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr), which strategically links the universities of Duisburg-Essen, Bochum, and Dortmund. KWI is closely connected to Folkwang University of the Arts and is located within easy reach of the universities of Düsseldorf, Cologne, Münster, and Bielefeld, as well as the Netherlands and Belgium. An important contribution to KWI’s scholarly work comes from the Academy in Exile, which offers research space to colleagues whose academic freedom is threatened. The Ruhr Metropolitan Area was designated a European Capital of Culture in 2010 and has since evolved into a cultural hub with a rich outdoor and urban landscape.

Selection Criteria

Fellows are selected by a committee comprising members of the KWI governing board and the institute’s director. Applications are assessed on the quality and originality of the proposed research project, its alignment with KWI’s current research agenda, the applicant’s academic track record and publication list, and the potential contribution to ongoing scholarly conversations at the institute. Particular encouragement is given to scholars whose research projects align with KWI’s research areas.
