The Gates Scholarship (TGS) is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship established in 2017 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for outstanding minority high school seniors from low-income households across the United States. Each year, approximately 300 exceptional student leaders are selected to receive the scholarship, which is designed to help them realise their maximum academic potential by removing financial barriers to degree completion. As a last-dollar scholarship, TGS covers the full remaining cost of attendance that is not already covered by other financial aid and the Student Aid Index, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the methodology used by the scholar’s college or university. The scholarship is renewable annually for up to five years, provided scholars remain enrolled full-time in a bachelor’s degree programme and maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:
- Must be a United States citizen, national, or permanent resident
- Must be a member of a minority group — specifically American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian & Pacific Islander, Black/African American, or Hispanic American
- Must be a current high school senior at the time of application
- Must have a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent)
- Must be Pell Grant-eligible as determined through the FAFSA
- Must plan to enrol full-time as a first-time, first-year student at an accredited, not-for-profit four-year U.S. college or university in the fall following the application year
- Must demonstrate exceptional leadership ability and commitment to community service and impact

Selection Criteria
The Gates Scholarship is among the most competitive scholarships in the United States. Approximately 300 scholars are selected annually from a pool of thousands of applicants. Candidates are assessed on academic excellence (minimum 3.3 GPA), demonstrated leadership potential — evidenced through extracurricular involvement, community service, and personal impact — financial need as determined through Pell eligibility via FAFSA, and the quality of personal essays and recommendation letters. Personal qualities including emotional maturity, perseverance, and the commitment to making a positive difference in their communities are also key evaluation criteria. The selection process includes a Semifinalist Phase (December 2026 – January 2027), Finalist Interviews (March 2027), and final Selection (April 2027), with awards communicated between July and September 2027.
