Yale University’s Undergraduate Need-Based Financial Aid Programme is one of the most generous and comprehensive financial aid programmes in the world, built on the principle that cost should never be a barrier to achieving academic dreams. Yale awards every dollar of undergraduate financial aid on the basis of a family’s demonstrated financial need, and its aid offers meet 100% of demonstrated need regardless of a student’s citizenship or immigration status without requiring loans. All financial aid is awarded in the form of scholarship grants that never need to be repaid. Yale does not include loans in initial financial aid offers. Approximately 55% of Yale College students receive need-based financial aid, 80% of US families with children at Yale qualify for grants covering at least the full cost of tuition, and 88% of Yale College graduates carry no student loan debt.

Yale University, founded in 1701 and located in New Haven, Connecticut, is one of the world’s most prestigious research universities and a member of the Ivy League. Consistently ranked among the top universities globally, Yale is renowned for its excellence across law, medicine, the arts, sciences, humanities, social sciences, and engineering. Yale College the undergraduate division is home to approximately 6,000 students from all 50 U.S. states and more than 120 countries, organised into 14 residential colleges. Yale’s commitment to making its world-class education accessible to students of all financial backgrounds is embodied in its need-blind admissions policy for U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and international students alike, combined with one of the most generous need-based aid programmes in American higher education.

Selection Criteria

Yale’s financial aid is awarded exclusively on the basis of demonstrated financial need — there are no merit-based scholarships for undergraduates at Yale. Each family’s financial situation is assessed holistically by Yale’s personal financial aid counselors, who consider income, assets, family size, number of family members in college, and any unique circumstances. Financial aid policies are built on the principles of vertical and horizontal equity — families with different financial resources should expect different costs, while families with similar resources should expect similar costs. Aid offers are designed to be ready at the time of admission decisions for families who apply by the priority deadlines. Families whose applications are incomplete at the time of admissions decisions remain eligible for aid, and offers will not be reduced due to late submission provided the application is complete before the admissions reply deadline.
