The ICGEB Arturo Falaschi Fellowship Programmes are a suite of competitive, multidisciplinary fellowships offered by the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) — an intergovernmental organisation with Component Laboratories in Trieste (Italy), New Delhi (India), and Cape Town (South Africa). The fellowship programme is dedicated to the memory of Professor Arturo Falaschi, the first Director-General of ICGEB, and provides advanced training in the Life Sciences and biotechnology at world-class research facilities. The current open call for September 2026 includes nine fellowship programmes: the Arturo Falaschi Short-term PhD Fellowships; the Arturo Falaschi Postdoctoral Fellowships; the Arturo Falaschi Short-term Postdoctoral Fellowships; the Arturo Falaschi SMART Fellowships for researcher mobility between ICGEB Member States; the Biotechnet Short-term PhD Fellowships and Short-term Advanced Fellowships (for scientists from East Africa); the ICGEB-AICAD Short-term Postdoctoral Fellowships (for scientists from Africa in partnership with the African Institute for Capacity Development); and the ICGEB Fellowships for Scientists in Biosecurity — one for Central Asia, Mongolia, Ukraine, and Moldova, and one for Africa.

The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), established in 1983 and with Component Laboratories in Trieste, New Delhi, and Cape Town, is an intergovernmental organisation operating within the United Nations Common System. ICGEB is a centre of excellence for Research, Training, and Technology Transfer, dedicated to promoting sustainable global development through advanced science in the Life Sciences. ICGEB conducts cutting-edge research across infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, medical biotechnology, industrial biotechnology, and plant biology and biotechnology, and is deeply committed to gender equality with women comprising over 62% of fellowship participants. The ICGEB Fellowship Programme is one of the world’s leading initiatives for capacity building in biotechnology in developing countries.

Selection Criteria

All ICGEB fellowship applications are assessed competitively by ICGEB’s Fellowships Unit and Scientific Faculty. Candidates are evaluated on the strength of their academic and research background, the quality and relevance of the proposed research project, alignment with ICGEB’s research areas and the expertise of the prospective host laboratory, and the potential scientific and developmental impact of the fellowship. ICGEB is committed to gender equality and actively promotes the participation of women scientists — in 2024, 62% of all fellows were women. Short-term and SMART fellowships additionally require evidence of existing collaborative links between the applicant’s home institution and the ICGEB host laboratory. For Biosecurity Fellowships, relevance to biological threat detection and response is a key selection criterion.
