Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) offers scholarships for students admitted to its Master of Science in Photonics Engineering programme, delivered through PHORTIFY (PHOtonics education netwoRk for nexT-gen Innovation and digital skills excellence for industry and society), a European Union–funded initiative under the Digital Europe Programme. PHORTIFY supports inclusion, mobility, and excellence in photonics education, and at VUB this takes the form of Master Programme Scholarships available to international students from selected eligible nationalities as well as local Belgian students enrolling in the MSc in Photonics Engineering. For students starting in 2026, awards are based on academic excellence and are granted for a fixed period of 12 months, covering one academic year. Scholarships can only be awarded to students studying on campus, not online.
Vrije Universiteit Brussel, established in 1970 in Brussels, Belgium, is a Dutch-speaking university that grew out of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), founded in 1834. VUB offers programmes across a wide range of disciplines, including engineering, sciences, social sciences, humanities, and life sciences, at both Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. The university is known for its principle of free inquiry, its international outlook, and its involvement in EU-funded education and research initiatives such as PHORTIFY. VUB is headquartered at Pleinlaan 2, 1050 Brussels, and welcomes students from around the world to its campuses in Etterbeek, Jette, Anderlecht, and Gooik.

- EUR 12,000 for non-EU students for one academic year
- EUR 7,200 for EU students (reduced tuition fee) for one academic year

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:
International Students (Non-EU/EU):
- Must be applying for the MSc in Photonics Engineering at VUB

Belgian Students:
- Must be enrolling in the MSc in Photonics Engineering at VUB
- Must apply during the regular application procedure

Selection Criteria
Scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence. Applicants must meet the MSPE application deadline for their category non-EU, EU, or Belgian and separately submit the PHORTIFY scholarship application by its own deadline. Awards are granted for a fixed 12-month period and apply only to students studying on campus.
