The University of Waterloo President’s and Merit Scholarships are entrance awards offered annually to recognise outstanding academic achievement among incoming undergraduate students. All students admitted to a full-time first-year degree program and beginning university or college for the first time in September are automatically considered, with no application required. The scholarships are awarded in early May based on the admission average, calculated using grades from the top six Grade 12 courses or equivalents, including the required courses for the program applied to. There are three tiers of awards: the President’s Scholarship of Distinction for students with an admission average of 95% or higher, the President’s Scholarship for averages of 90 to 94.9%, and the Merit Scholarship for averages of 85 to 89.9%. Students will be notified of their scholarship through the Waterloo applicant portal, and in late July will receive information on how to use the award toward tuition and fees.
